Community Development Tour | Annual Convention

RegisterView Program

Join us on day two, October 18, of the Annual Convention to see how banks are leading community revitalization efforts in Tampa.

Sponsored by the Federal Home Loan Banks, ABA Foundation will host an on-the-ground in-person community development tour of the Old West Tampa and Jackson Heights neighborhoods. The tour will highlight how public-private partnerships between banks, local government and nonprofit organizations leverage community resources to holistically transform the city. Participants will see first-hand examples of how affordable housing, programs addressing homelessness, veterans’ needs, and senior housing are improving the lives of vulnerable people while simultaneously strengthening entire communities.

Tour Destinations

James Cole Village (Jackson Heights)

Named after a local Vietnam War veteran who served as one of Tampa’s first Black firefighters, James Cole Village provides 30 units for homeless as well as low-income veterans and their families. In addition to housing, residents may access case management, support services and therapeutic treatments for PTSD. Funding sources include a grant from the Florida Housing Finance Corporation (FHFC), a loan from the Housing Authority of Hillsborough County, FL, a grant from the City of Tampa, charitable contributions, and AHP funding from FHLBank Atlanta.

Mary McLeod Bethune Apartments (Old West Tampa)

This $34 million adaptive renovation of a public housing project celebrates the legacy of a prominent civil and women’s rights leader. Mary McLeod Bethune Apartments provide 150 one- and two-bedroom units for low and very low-income senior households. Sponsored by the Tampa Housing Authority, in partnership with the City of Tampa, and the Related Group, the project is part of a larger redevelopment initiative to revitalize west Tampa. Funding sources include LIHTC equity, a Fannie Mae loan through Truist Bank, sponsor loan, seller note, and AHP funding from FHLBank Atlanta.
