2023 Community Committment Awards Submission

  • Entry Category: Financial Education
  • Asset Size: Small

First Citizens National Bank’s President and COO, Judy Long, launched the “Smart Women” program with a goal of empowering women, through education, to confidently make difficult financial decisions.

Long and the FirstCNB team gathered information and began to develop this program to help women better utilize the bank’s services and take control of their own financial lives, especially when life-changing events happen. Each event presented an opportunity for education from first-time homebuyers and saving for holidays to retirement and estate planning.

FirstCNB has partnered with the American Library Association (ALA) to bring these free events and programs to local communities. Partnering with ALA allows the opportunity to reach more members of the community, while providing a neutral facility where individuals would feel comfortable asking questions. FirstCNB also partners with individuals who are financial experts in their respective fields as guest speakers for the events.

In March 2018, “Smart Women” presented its first program “Understanding Social Security Benefits” at a local library with guest speaker Susan Wood (Pacific Life Insurance Company). Most recently, “Smart Women” held an event for the University of Tennessee Martin Panhellenic Panel in April 2023. The event hosted 160 sorority women who learned about everyday financial decisions such as budgeting, saving, managing credit and how to utilize financial literacy resources to their benefit. Keynote speaker, Lisa Smartt, discussed how to find contentment in a discontent world.

To meet financial literacy needs of an even younger demographic, “Smart Women” led to the launch of the “Smart Kids” program.
