Beyond the Hype: Practical AI Use Cases for Community Bankers

Artificial intelligence has moved rapidly from a futuristic concept to a topic that is hard for community bankers to ignore. It’s showing up in industry headlines, conference sessions and boardroom conversations, accompanied by both lofty promises and stern warnings. Some bankers are eager to explore what AI can do. Others are understandably cautious about privacy, accuracy, proper governance and the potential impact on employees and customers.

For community banks, however, the important question is not “How quickly can we adopt AI?” but rather “Where can AI make a meaningful difference for our bank?” As with any new process or product for the organization, leaders must ask themselves how AI aligns with their strategy.

Rather than viewing AI as a stand-alone initiative, banks should consider how it supports the broader strategy and goals of the institution. That means starting with the problems a bank is already trying to solve, from information overload and inefficient processes to data analysis and employee productivity, and determining whether AI is the right tool for the job.

PRI Principal Data Engineer Jessica Mueller notes that banks should resist the temptation to adopt technology simply because it is generating industry buzz.

Mueller describes AI as an organizational tool that can help banks understand how work gets done. From there, bankers can begin distinguishing between an AI problem and a human or process problem.

The opportunity is significant, but so is the need for thoughtful implementation. As PRI has noted before, the goal should not be technology for technology’s sake, but technology that meaningfully solves problems within the bank’s strategic mission.
