The Emerging Middle Market Is Growing Faster Than Financial Infrastructure Can Support

Growth across the U.S. middle market continues to accelerate. Yet, the financial infrastructure supporting it is not keeping pace.

A growing segment of businesses generating between $1 million and $50 million in annual revenue is scaling rapidly, with many reporting annual growth rates exceeding 20%. These companies are expanding operations, increasing transaction volume and taking on greater financial complexity.

Recent research from i2c, conducted in collaboration with PYMNTS Intelligence, highlights a consistent pattern across this segment. Confidence is high—more than 90% of fast-scaling firms expect to achieve their growth objectives. Yet only 43% say their financial tools match their current scale.

Most are operating in a state of adaptation, bridging gaps between systems, introducing manual processes and, in some cases, delaying decisions that should be immediate.

This is not a temporary inefficiency. It is a structural mismatch.

An underserved segment stuck between two models

Financial services have traditionally scaled in two directions: standardized solutions for smaller businesses and customized offerings for large enterprises.

The emerging middle market fits neither model cleanly.

These firms have outgrown entry-level products but are not yet positioned for fully bespoke infrastructure. What these firms require are financial products and systems better aligned with the speed, complexity and operational realities of their growth. And that gap is becoming more pronounced as they scale.

Complexity is outpacing infrastructure

As businesses scale, financial operations become more interconnected. Payments, liquidity, accounting and credit increasingly function as a continuous system rather than discrete processes.

Most financial infrastructure, however, was not designed to operate that way.

Instead, it remains fragmented across providers, products and workflows. That fragmentation introduces friction at the point where speed and coordination matter most. Decisions take longer.

Visibility narrows. Operational risk increases.

In practice, growth velocity and infrastructure maturity are moving in opposite directions—firms scaling the fastest are often operating with the least integrated financial systems.

Credit access exists—but deployment lags

Access to credit, in aggregate terms, is not the primary constraint. Deployment is.

Nearly half of high-growth firms (46%) report missing opportunities because available credit is too slow, too rigid or misaligned with real-time business conditions. Traditional underwriting models, built on historical performance, often lag behind companies defined by forward momentum.

The result is a timing gap. By the time capital is approved, the need has evolved.

To compensate, 87% of these firms rely on personal funds and credit products to support operations. For many, this is no longer a temporary bridge. Nearly one-third of fast-scaling firms fund half or more of their operations through personal financing, underscoring how persistent the gap has become.

At the same time, nearly nine in 10 report postponing strategic investments due to constraints tied to outdated tools and processes, and only 11% report no delays at all.

This is not a lack of capital. It is a lack of responsiveness.

“The emerging middle market isn’t constrained by credit—it’s constrained by systems,” said Candace Davies, Chief Marketing Officer of i2c. “As growth accelerates, real-time responsiveness becomes more critical than credit availability for this segment. Yet fragmented, lagging infrastructure continues to leave even the fastest-scaling middle-market firms with too little, too late.”

Implications for banks

For banks, this shift is less about expanding product sets and more about improving how those capabilities work together.

The emerging middle market is signaling a change in expectations. Speed, flexibility and visibility are no longer differentiators; they are baseline requirements.

Nearly half of fast-scaling firms indicate that faster payments would improve cash flow visibility or directly enable growth. At the same time, more than 80% prioritize faster, more flexible access to credit over cost, reflecting a clear shift toward responsiveness as the defining requirement.

In practical terms, that includes:

• Credit access that adjusts to current business conditions, not just historical performance
• Real-time visibility across payments and liquidity
• Reduced operational friction through more integrated systems

Closing the gap

The emerging middle market is not constrained by ambition. It is constrained by the systems around it.

The challenge is not a lack of capability. The necessary components already exist across the financial ecosystem. The challenge is alignment—bringing together payments, credit and data into a more unified and responsive system that reflects how emerging middle market businesses run today.

And these businesses are clear about what they need next: integration, speed and access calibrated to companies in transition—between the tools they have and the scale they are rapidly approaching.

As growth continues to accelerate, that alignment will determine which institutions can scale with their clients and which risk being outpaced by them.
