Protecting Older Customers: Internal Controls and External Outreach Strategies

Tuesday, April 30, 2019 • 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. ET

2.0 CAFP, 2.0 CERP, 2.0 CRCM

The United States is experiencing an unprecedented increase in both the population of older Americans and the immense criminal scams they face. Between 2014 and 2017, Suspicious Activity Reports related to elder financial exploitation tripled as abused seniors lost an average of $34,200. With the growing threat to older Americans, banks are continuously seeking stronger controls and methods to protect their older consumers.

Join ABA for a discussion featuring first-hand tips and strategies from bankers who have implemented internal policies and external outreach campaigns to help detect, prevent and address elder financial abuse.

Discussion Highlights:

  • Hear about staff training, alerts and red flags as well as other fraud detection tools banks have employed
  • Discuss ways to partner with law enforcement and community-based organizations
  • Explore how to create an external outreach campaign to engage with consumers—and then promote it

Speakers:

  • Laurel Sykes, CRCM, Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer, Montecito Bank & Trust
  • Sherry Schneider, Operational Risk Director, Senior Vice President, Old National Bancorp
  • Sam Kunjukunju, Director, Banker Community Engagement, American Bankers Association
