Certification Exams FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why does ABA use computer-based testing?
Computer-based testing offers candidates advantages in scheduling and convenience. Instead of having to take the exam on a fixed day and time, computer based testing offers candidates the flexibility of taking the exam any day and time during a 30-day testing window that best fits your schedule, subject to availability.

Will the certification exams be offered in paper-and-pencil format?
Yes, but only at exams scheduled onsite at schools. All other exams will be computer-based and offered at Castle Test Sites.

Can I take the computer-based certification exam on my computer at home or at work?
No. The computer-based exams are only offered at Castle Test Sites during the defined date range noted on the exam schedule.

The computer-based exams are offered at Castle Test Sites across the United States.

The normal hours of operation at Castle Test Sites are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but times can vary. When registering, confirm the hours with the Castle Test Sites you wish to select.

What is the test site change or cancellation policy?
If you wish to reschedule or cancel a testing appointment within the same exam window, you must contact Castle at least 4 business days before the scheduled appointment. Canceling or rescheduling a testing appointment more than 4 business days in advance is subject to a $50 fee. Canceling or rescheduling less than 4 business days in advance of an appointment is not permitted.

In addition to the test site fee, what are the additional ABA cancel/change/withdrawal fees that will apply if candidates wish to move to another exam window?

Please review the procedures and fee schedule on the Exam Cancellation/Rescheduling page. All change and cancellation requests must be made in writing to ABA.

ABA will consider waiving fees in case of a medical emergency. Requests will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Are individuals with disabilities accommodated in the computer-based testing centers?
Yes. All U.S. testing centers are fully accessible and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). You must submit your request for reasonable accommodations, along with supporting documentation with your exam application.

How long will it take to receive exam results?
The exam is scored on a "Pass/Fail" system using a predetermined cut off score based on advisory board analysis of the degree of difficulty for each question.  An instant pass/fail score outcome is provided for computer based exams at testing centers.  Official score results will be delivered via email for both computer based and paper and pencil exams within 4 weeks after the close of the exam window.  Exams are scored based on your personal performance and are not graded on a curve.  Score results are confidential.  You must sign an Exam Score Release Form if you want to authorize a third party to receive your score results.

*Please note, CAFP, CFMP, CERP and CTFA exam candidates will not receive an instant pass/fail score outcome.  Official score results will be delivered via email for both computer based and paper and pencil exams within 4-6 weeks after the close of the exam window.

Each exam contains a small number of randomly embedded questions that are included for statistical research purposes.  These questions do not count against candidate scores.  This form of piloting questions before they are scorable is part of ABA's efforts in continuous quality improvement.

How are exams scored?
Exam scores are based on the total number of items answered correctly.  The total number of items correct is then converted to a scaled score for reporting purposes. Scaled scores are a mathematical conversion of the number of items that a candidate correctly answers so that there is a consistent scale used across all versions of a test.

All ABA Professional Certification exams use scaled scoring. Scaled scores are recommended by the Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing. Many testing programs, including the ACT® and SAT®, use scaled scores.

All ABA Professional Certification exams are scored on a scale ranging from 200 to 800, with the passing score set at 500.

How much will the computer-based exam cost?
All exam fees are listed on each designation's webpage.
