FCC Adopts ABA-Advocated Immediate Notification Requirement for Erroneously Blocked Calls

The Federal Communications Commission on Dec. 30 ordered telephone companies to provide immediate notification when it blocks a call placed by a bank or other caller, as ABA urged. Telephone companies have until Jan. 1, 2022 to comply with this requirement.

The FCC also required telephone companies to provide a status update within 24 hours when a caller disputes whether its call should have been blocked. The FCC’s order responds to the TRACED Act, which directed the FCC to ensure that call-blocking services be provided with transparency and effective redress options for callers.
