Next Week: Fed’s Michelle Bowman and Magic Johnson to Address Community Bankers at Virtual ABA Conference

WASHINGTON —

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman will address bankers from across the country at the American Bankers Association’s 41st Conference for Community Bankers, held virtually Feb. 16-17. Bowman, who holds the Federal Reserve Board seat designated for someone with community banking experience, will share her views on the challenges and opportunities facing community banks given the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, the Fed’s outlook for the economy and community bank regulation, and other issues. The annual conference provides attendees with strategic, solutions-focused content directly relevant to community banks, as well as the opportunity to forge and grow valuable connections across the industry.

ABA President and CEO Rob Nichols will open the conference by outlining ABA’s 2021 advocacy agenda for community banks, detailing the latest on the industry’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and providing an update on ABA's financial inclusion and core platforms initiatives. Other speakers include basketball legend, entrepreneur, and philanthropist Earvin “Magic” Johnson, who will discuss his commitment to supporting ethnically diverse and underserved urban communities and the role community banks can play; Hakeem Oluseyi, an internationally recognized astrophysicist, science TV personality and global education advocate; and Ron Shevlin, managing director of fintech research at Cornerstone Advisors.

“This year’s Conference for Community Bankers will provide attendees with a great opportunity to join their peers and learn about the road ahead after a challenging year that demonstrated community banks’ strong contribution to both the country and the economy,” Nichols said. “The exceptional lineup of speakers and educational sessions will provide important insights and solutions to a range of issues facing community banks and give them new ideas to better serve their customers and communities.”

This year’s conference includes question and answer sessions with speakers, small peer group discussions and new educational sessions that focus on key areas including leadership and operations, CRE lending and payments. A sampling of other sessions topics include:

  • Evolving the Community Banker Business Model
  • Managing Credit Risks in the New Normal
  • Lessons Learned from COVID-19
  • Strategies to Retain Top Performers
  • The Top Ten Considerations for Real-Time Payments
