ABA Statement on FCC Vote to Block Illegal Automated Calls

“Our members share the FCC’s goal of eliminating illegal, automated calls. Today’s declaratory ruling advances that goal, while at the same time taking an initial step to prevent consumers from missing critically important and time-sensitive calls affecting their financial well-being, health and safety. We commend the Commission for improving the final ruling to require that legitimate callers have the ability to inform telecommunications providers of erroneously blocked numbers and have those blocks released. We continue to believe that callers should be notified when their calls are erroneously blocked, so consumers can continue to receive the fraud notifications, low-balance alerts and other valuable bank information they want and need. As this ruling is implemented, we urge the FCC to assess whether those notifications are being made in the most timely and efficient manner possible.”
