Colorado Banker Appointed Chairman of ABA's American Bankers Council

WASHINGTON —

The American Bankers Association today announced that Jim Reuter has been appointed chairman of ABA’s American Bankers Council for the 2020-2021 membership year. Reuter is the chief executive officer and president of FirstBank in Denver, where he has spent 33 years in various roles throughout the organization.

Reuter previously served as FirstBank’s chief operating officer where he oversaw many of the bank’s divisions, including loan and mortgage operations, IT, online banking, payments, contact center, online account/loan acquisition, and treasury management. FirstBank has attributed many of the bank’s products and IT innovations to Reuter’s leadership and guidance.

"Jim is one of banking’s most dedicated and innovative executives, and an industry leader in the payments and technology space,” said Rob Nichols, ABA president and CEO. “He is an ideal choice to lead ABA’s American Bankers Council and to help us better understand the challenges and opportunities facing midsize banks at this important moment for our industry and the country.”

The American Bankers Council is ABA’s banker-driven peer group for midsize bank chief executives. The council provides feedback and direction to ABA on key regulatory and legislative issues critical to midsize banks. The council also participates in regular meetings with their peers to exchange information and share best practices on issues affecting their banks.

In addition to leading FirstBank, the largest bank headquartered in Colorado, Reuter serves on the payment advisory group for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City and has been an ABA board member since 2019. He has also served as the chair of ABA’s Government Relations Council, the chair of the ABA Payments System Advisory Committee, a member of ABA’s Venture Investment Committee and a board member for the Colorado Bankers Association.

Reuter is also a highly active member of his community, and currently holds positions on multiple nonprofit boards including the American Cancer Society of Colorado, CEOs Against Cancer, the Women’s Foundation of Colorado, the Special Olympics of Colorado, the Blind Institute of Technology, and the Cerebral Palsy of Colorado Legacy Foundation.

Reuter earned his degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
