ABA Launches New Training to Help Bankers Detect Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling

There are approximately 25 million victims of human trafficking around the world, including 403,000 in the United States alone. In recognition of National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month and banks’ important role in combating these crimes, the American Bankers Association today launched a new online course on human trafficking and human smuggling—two growing crimes that often involve illicit banking activity.

“Banks are in a unique position to help identify, prevent and disrupt these heinous crimes,” said Jim Edrington, ABA's chief member engagement officer. “It is critical for frontline staff to know the red flags and customer indicators that may be alerts for sophisticated human trafficking and human smuggling schemes, and this training will help them enhance the extraordinary measures they are already taking to support law enforcement in these areas.”

Part of ABA’s free-to-members Frontline Compliance Training offering, this 60-minute, self-paced course helps bankers identify possible financial and behavioral indicators of human trafficking and human smuggling, know the difference between the two crimes and be prepared to report potential criminal activity to the proper authorities. Bankers in all job roles are encouraged to register.

Banks of all sizes use modern technology as well as years of experience to spot suspicious activity that might indicate illicit financial activity such as human trafficking and human smuggling. A recent success on this front includes the 2018 Super Bowl in Minneapolis, in which U.S. Bank spent 10 months identifying potential transaction patterns that could signal human trafficking. They shared their insights with other local banks and law enforcement, contributing to 94 arrests for sex trafficking in the days around Super Bowl LII.
