"Taming the Money Jungle" is an annual fall semester kickoff event MidFirst conducts on the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO) campus to set students on a strong financial path in college and beyond. 410 students attended the jungle themed event in 2019, which featured a jungle animal scavenger hunt, safari-themed decorations, financial trivia game, drawstring backpacks with "tools," themed t-shirts, and six scholarship giveaways. A "safari guide" (a MidFirst MoneyMoments® financial education manager dressed in full themed costume) unveiled a backpack full of tools students would need to succeed in their money jungle and took students on a financial journey to learn the proper use of each one.

Tools in the backpack included:

  1. Map: To plan their money expedition (short and long term money goals)
  2. Camera: To see a snapshot of where they spend their money (expense tracking)
  3. Binoculars: To take a closer look at friends who seem to have it all, but may really be hiding behind financial stress
  4. Bug Spray: To spray away pesky habits like impulse buying and purchasing items "just because they are on sale"

This event is produced in partnership with UCO Student Support Services and Freshmen Success Central, two campus programs designed to help students succeed in college. It serves as a kickoff event for our year-round student financial education initiative. In 2019, we presented 42 workshops to 1,150 students on the UCO campus.
