Shred Day

Carter Bank & Trust - Martinsville, Virginia

2020 Community Commitment Awards Submission

  • Entry Category: Economic Inclusion
  • Asset Size: Small

In early 2019, Carter Bank & Trust partnered with the Friends of the Town of Hillsville to sponsor and host a Shred-A-Thon at our North Main Street branch in Hillsville. After seeing the success of the event, Carter Bank & Trust began hosting community Shred Days as a community service and outreach program with a primary goal to assist our community members in safely disposing of sensitive personal documents. As a lifetime financial partner for our customers and communities, we believed it was our responsibility to provide this service at no cost to the community. To compound our service and engagement in the community through this event, we also incorporated a food drive to assist organizations who provide services to the low - moderate income and majority - minority areas of our community who experience food insecurity. Individuals were welcome to bring up to eight boxes of documents and were invited to bring non-perishable food items to "pay it forward". The first event occurred in May at our South Boston branch and donations were distributed to local food banks, Hope Food Pantry and Passage Place. The second event, taking place in Martinsville in September, contributed to The Community Fellowship to support their food pantry program. The third goal of the event was to educate customers on the newly launched online and mobile banking platform, Carter on the Go, as part of our initiative to reduce paper use by providing statements and billing in a digital form.
