2021 Community Commitment Awards Submission

  • Entry Category: Financial Education

At Synovus, our commitment to communities is implemented through “Here Matters,” the company’s community outreach program. Building upon a hundred-year legacy of community service, Here Matters focuses primarily on volunteer and financial contributions in three areas: education, needs-based opportunities, and health and wellness.

Through “Here Matters,” Synovus developed “Raise the Banner” as our financial education program aimed at educating communities regarding financial literacy, which we believe is key to improving the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities overall.

In September 2020, Synovus partnered with the District Court, Fifteenth Judicial Circuit in Montgomery, Alabama, to support the creation of the Montgomery Financial Literacy Assistance Program (MFLAP). Conceived by Judge Monet Gaines, who oversees the Fifteenth Circuit’s “Worthless Check Unit,” MFLAP offers financial education to offenders charged with writing bad checks and recurring offenses associated with limited financial education. Offenders — primarily low to moderate-income individuals — are provided substantive financial guidance and training on budgeting and other financial subjects. Although offenders may not be able to have restitution obligations waived in lieu of training, they are able to receive some forgiveness for fines and fees associated with specific financial and other related crimes.
