Junior Board of Directors

United Community Bank (Honorable Mention) - Greenville, South Carolina

2021 Community Commitment Awards Submission

  • Entry Category: Financial Education
  • Asset Size: Medium

The Junior Board of Directors is a financial education program offered in partnership with local high schools and United Community Bank in six of our communities - Cleveland, Georgia; Blue Ridge, Georgia; Ellijay, Georgia; Blairsville, Georgia; Brunswick, Georgia; and Hiawassee, Georgia.

During the 12 month program, 11th and 12th grade students participate in personal finance workshops, career development sessions, mentoring meetings, service learning projects and leadership development seminars.

Junior Board members are taken on a tour of the Atlanta Monetary Museum. The tour provides in-depth lessons on the role of the Federal Reserve in the U.S. economy. Students learn how and why the Fed conducts monetary policy and how its actions affect their lives, they hear about the Fed's important roles in bank supervision and regulation and they also learn the big picture of the many ways the Fed provides payments system services to help our economy run smoothly and maintain the stability of the financial system.

More often than not, the students favorite part of the tour is when they take a look inside the cash-processing operations, where millions of dollars are counted, sorted, or shredded daily. They also get a glimpse into the bank's automated vault and see the robotic transports that do the heavy lifting.

Since its inception in 2005, the Junior Board has increased the financial literacy, career readiness and leadership skills of over 1000 11th and 12th grade students.
