  • Entry Category: Financial Education
  • Asset Size: Small

Red River Bank (RRB) believes financial literacy is key to success, particularly for graduating seniors about to enter the workforce. In continuing our commitment of financial educational, RRB collaborated with the Rapides School Board JAG-LA (Jobs for America's Graduates) on the financial literacy project “Operation Money Moves” (OMM). JAG-LA is an affiliate of the National JAG program serving youth 12-21 years of age. It provides an educational setting that promotes academic skills, civic responsibility, leadership development and social awareness, all skills necessary to become a responsible citizen and productive worker. The goal of this pilot project was to get every graduating senior enrolled in the JAG Program to open and learn how to manage a checking and savings account, as well as help prepare them to make sound financial decisions as they get ready to enter adulthood. The project lasted the entire school year, included JAG students from five high schools utilizing in person and online financial education tools. The four-in person sessions included:

  1. Kick Off - Check It Out, Pay Yourself First & Mobile Money Machine Demonstration;
  2. Onsite Account Opening, Making Transactions, & Charge It Right;
  3. Filing Income Taxes & Completing the FAFSA; and
  4. Buying A Car, Roof Over Head and Graduation.

Although COVID-19 affected the last session, this pilot project was a success with 91 students graduating from the program opening 40 new accounts.
