Helping Hands

Bank Independent (Honorable Mention) - Sheffield, Alabama

2021 Community Commitment Awards Submission

  • Entry Category: Volunteerism
  • Asset Size: Small

Bank Independent's Helping Hands initiative was inspired by employee requests for organized volunteer opportunities after the April 27, 2011 tornadoes. The initiative has evolved to offer four established and focused share drives to include, Shelter Share to benefit animal shelters, Food Share to collect non-perishable food items, School Share to collect school supplies, and Toy Share to collect toys for children during the holiday season.

Along with the organized drives, Helping Hands provides team member volunteer opportunities, community driven donations and sponsorships of charities and organizations throughout the community. Over the last 11 years, Bank Independent team members have donated over 10,000 hours in paid volunteer time to community efforts and created a financial impact of more than .2 million.

The project we are pleased to highlight is our Mask-making Project created in response to recent the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on local medical providers. Over a period of several weeks at the beginning of the pandemic, Bank Independent team members sewed and distributed over 1,000 protective masks to hospitals across North Alabama to augment supplies during the COVID-19 crisis.

The masks were distributed to Helen Keller Hospital, North Alabama Medical Center, Athens-Limestone Hospital, Huntsville Hospital, and the Decatur-Morgan Hospital.
