Nestled in the heart of the Broadway theatre district, Encore Community Services has catered to the needs of low-income seniors for 30 years. Encore offers housing, social services and a community center for seniors who need help, housing or friends. Mizuho employees volunteer in their community center 3x a week serving lunch to seniors, and has served thousands of meals over the years. Mizuho has also arranged for special programs such as inviting the NYPD to partner with Mizuho staff in training seniors on how to prevent elder fraud. Most recently, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mizuho reached out to Encore to ask if the organization had any urgent, unmet needs. Together we brainstormed different strategies to help, including assisting Encore staff in developing and piloting their Friendly Phone Call Program. Now a few months into the pandemic, we have approximately 60 volunteers participating in this program and engagement continues to grow. "For 23 years, Mizuho Americas has been volunteering with Encore Community Services. From being stalwarts in our Congregate lunch service working in the kitchen to helping deliver meals to the homebound to helping pilot and launch a Friendly Phone Call program to keep seniors safe and social connected during the global pandemic, Mizuho Americas has epitomized the meaning of community and has exemplified what is means to be a good neighbor and socially responsible corporate partner," says Jeremy Kaplan, Exec. Director, Encore.
