Machias Savings Bank - Machias, Maine

2020 Community Commitment Awards Submission

  • Entry Category: Volunteerism
  • Asset Size: Small

150 years ago Machias Savings Bank began as an effort by volunteers, to support a local community's growth in rural Downeast Maine. Today volunteerism remains the cornerstone of our culture. Culture is both our strategy, and what makes us different at Machias Savings Bank. It can also be seen in our “Culture Compass”, which includes such points as our formal Family First philosophy, an emphasis on hand-crafted banking built on personal relationships, and a deeply engrained approach based on an attitude of “Yes, we can help you”. We believe it can be best summed up in our corporate mission, “To move Maine forward, one person, one business, and one community at a time”. All 290 of our employees in 16 branches from Portland to Caribou understand that our ability to affect measurable and meaningful community progress requires efforts and initiatives that extend well beyond the branch. In fact, we often say we are a statewide army of community change agents that just happens to be powered by a bank. In order to maximize this “army”, in 2017 we launched “CommUnity - Working Together, Giving Back”, a five-lane initiative empowering our employee's individual philanthropic passions utilizing three directives - Make it flexible. Make it fulfilling. Make it supported. We set a goal of achieving 100% employee participation by 2020. We achieved that goal in 2019, supporting 692 organizations and collectively contributing over 12,000 hours of service statewide.
