The COVID-19 pandemic devastated Hawaii’s economy. By the end of April 2020, one out of every five jobs were lost. In response, First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, the charitable arm of First Hawaiian Bank (FHB), launched the Aloha for Hawaii initiative on April 13, 2020. The goal was to provide much-needed business to the restaurant industry, a particularly hard-hit sector, while raising critical funds for non-profits that support people impacted by the pandemic in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan where the bank has branch locations. For every restaurant takeout or delivery purchase made with an FHB debit or credit card, the FHB Foundation made a donation to the Aloha for Hawaii Fund, up to million. The Fund supported non-profit organizations in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan, with programs crucial for mental health, domestic violence, food security, health and human services. Projected to achieve one million card transactions in three months, FHB cardholders reached that goal in eight short weeks, leading to million donated to the Aloha for Hawaii Fund, plus an additional ,000 from NFL quarterback Marcus Mariota’s Motiv8 Foundation. From April 13 to June 7, the Aloha for Hawaii campaign delivered widespread impact and touched people in a variety of ways including 536,000 people receiving assistance, 354,000 meals provided and 8,700 people receiving health and human services support. The campaign also generated .5 million in sales revenue for the restaurant industry.
