2017 Workshop: CECL Community Bank Implementation

To implement the upcoming Current Expected Credit Loss (CECL) standard, the challenge isn’t what you don’t know – it is what you think you know, but are wrong! Starting from the most basic elements of life of loan credit loss measurement, CECL experts led community bankers through the CECL process from the perspective of all areas of the company at the 2017 CFO Exchange.

Based on discussions over the past year with regulators, auditors, investors, and–most of all–bankers who are already going through the implementation process, this interactive and hands-on session included small group case studies in which attendees heard from actual bank CECL experiences. Topics included board communication, data evaluation, long-term goals for CECL standards and third-party solutions management.

Program Concepts and Frameworks:
  • CECL basics: Loss rates and data needed to support CECL analysis
  • Risk factors under CECL: What qualitative factors are no longer “qualitative” and what to do about them?
  • Unique challenges to community banks and how to address them
  • Implementation and conversion challenges
  • Different analyses for different products
  • Anticipating board and investor concerns
Presenters:
Mike Gullette, Vice President, Accounting and Financial Management, American Bankers Association, Washington, D.C.
Neekis Hammond, Senior Risk Management Consultant, Sageworks, Raleigh, N.C.
