2017 Award Winners

Congratulations to the 2017 winners who will be honored at the ABA Annual Convention, October 17 in Chicago, Illinois.

Affordable Housing

Woodforest National BankWoodforest National Bank, The Woodlands, Texas for its Wealth-Building through Homeownership Program which expands down payment assistance (DPA) through a first-of-its-kind private-public venture with Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs (TDHCA) to encourage low-to moderate income homeownership though an innovative $10 million loan agreement that increased access to DPA and closing cost funds.

Community and Economic Development

Alpine BankAlpine Bank, Glenwood Springs, CO for its Community Solar Program which donates bank-purchased solar panels to a local non-profit, Family and Intercultural Resource Center (FIRC), to help low income families save money on their energy bill freeing up critical financial resources.

Economic Inclusion

Green Dot BankGreen Dot Bank, Pasadena, CA for its Prize Savings Program which incentivizes Walmart MoneyCard customers to save by providing hundreds of cash prizes to those who put savings in their MoneyCard Vault. Designed to empower millions of low and moderate income families with the tools and incentives to save and is the first national prize-linked-savings program.

Financial Education

1st Security Bank1st Security Bank of Washington, Mountlake Terrace, WA for its financial literacy program with the IF Project. The program is part of a comprehensive mentoring initiative that helps female inmates incarcerated at the Washington Corrections Center for Women prepare for reentry into a successful life outside prison. Bank employees, including leadership, facilitate financial literacy sessions with the goal of providing practical money management knowledge.

​Protecting Older Americans

Bank of the RockiesBank of the Rockies, N.A., Clyde Park, MT for its CONversations About Cons program, which promotes elder fraud prevention and awareness through education and candid roundtable discussions with seniors, their families and caregivers. The program has expanded to include “Protecting Our Aging Treasures” to publicly promote elder fraud prevention.

Volunteerism

TBK BankTBK Bank, SSB, Dallas, TX for its program Investing in Change program in which key partners in the community are identified with whom the bank can build relationships through both corporate sponsored volunteer opportunities and charitable giving. The bank also offers a Matching Gifts Program and paid time outside of the office to support our team members and the organizations about which they are most passionate.

George Bailey Distinguished Service Award

Elizabeth “Beth” Prever, former senior vice president, marketing & PR, at TowneBank in Suffolk, Virginia, built a robust volunteer program at the bank.  The program ranged from working with the Roc Solid Foundation to building playsets for children with cancer to fundraising for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) through the Virginia Beach ALS Walk. Over the years her efforts raised approximately $400,000 for the cause, transforming it into the largest ALS walk in the country with significant participation from bank employees. Sadly, in 2016, Beth was diagnosed with ALS and passed away in August of 2017.
