 CHUCK SILVERMAN NAMED PRESIDENT OF BAFT
New board and officers also elected at annual meeting

WASHINGTON, May 7th– The Bankers’ Association for Finance and Trade has elected Chuck Silverman, managing director, global financial institutions and trade division for Wachovia Bank NA, to lead the organization for the 2008-2009 year at the association’s 86th annual meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.  BAFT is a worldwide financial institution trade association dedicated to fostering and promoting international trade, payments and finance.

“Representing BAFT will be an honor and a pleasure,” said Silverman, who heads the Indian sub-continent and Southeast Asian region for Wachovia. “I look forward to working with our members to support the industry and expand opportunities for the global financial institutions community.  The BAFT Board has worked hard to rewrite its strategic plan to become a more significant and issues-focused global association and I look forward to building upon that good work.”

Prior to his current role, Chuck led Wachovia’s global payment services sales group and was the project lead for its $245 million acquisition of Union Bank of California’s international banking group. Silverman has served on the Board of Directors of BAFT since 2004 and on the Executive Committee of the Board since 2005. He has a Bachelor of Arts in East Asian studies from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA.

BAFT members also elected Howard F. Bascom, Jr. as vice president.  Bascom is  managing director, trade finance services for The Bank of New York Mellon.  Craig H. Schurr was re-elected vice president for public policy.  Schurr is senior vice president and manager, global chain and supply solutions for National City Bank.  James H. Peterson was elected secretary-treasurer.  Peterson is managing director for The Northern Trust International Banking Corporation. 
Directors appointed to BAFT’s executive committee are John Ahearn, managing director, global head of supply chain management, structured trade, asset optimization and EAF, Citibank; Rita Gonzalez, managing director, head of GTB Institutional sales, Americas, HSBC Securities U.S.A.; and David B. Cooke, group head international trade finance, M&T Bank. Members gaining election to their first term on the board are David F. Conroy, TF-CMC corporate head Americas, Deutsche Bank AG; Howard S. Freeman, CEO, BBVA S.A.; Mark Garfield, vice president, international division manager, Zions Bank; Daisy Pillay, general manager, international financial institutions, Absa Corporate & Business Bank; and John Rodriguez, senior vice president, Wells Fargo Bank NA.

Re-elected board members include:

  • Kimberly Burdette, vice president and manager, global treasury management, PNC Financial Services Group;
  • John W. Campbell, partner, leader of the foreign banking and AML practices service, PricewaterhouseCoopers;
  • Sara K. Joyce, executive managing director, head of international financial institutions and trade finance, BMO Capital Markets;
  • Paul F. Oldshue, executive vice president and manager, international banking group, U.S. Bank;
  • Joseph L. Tansey, Jr., senior vice president, global trade and supply chain solutions, Bank of America N.A.;
  • Bennett W. Schwartz, senior vice president and director, international, TD Banknorth, N.A.;
  • Paul Warfield, vice president, director of global banking, First National Bank of Omaha; and
    Jeremy J.O’B. Wilson, vice chairman, Barclays Commercial Bank.

Outgoing president Craig C. Weeks remains on the Board as Chairman of the Nominating Committee. Weeks is managing director, global trade services, JPMorgan.
