ABA TO HOLD 20th ANNUAL AML CONFERENCE OCTOBER 21-23 IN WASHINGTON
Senior FinCEN officials, past and present, to speak

WASHINGTON, July 30 – The American Bankers Association and the American Bar Association Criminal Justice Section today announced that their 20th annual Money Laundering Enforcement Conference is set for Oct. 21-23 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Featured speakers include the current Director of the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network James H. Freis along with former Director Bob Werner and senior officials William Langford and Peter Djinis.

Fries, Werner, Langford and Djinis will be among the many leading authorities who will provide attendees with valuable guidance for anti-money laundering efforts under the intensified scrutiny of today's high-risk environment.

Also featured will be Professor Richard Gordon, visiting and distinguished practitioner in residence at Case Western Reserve University School of Law.   Following the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, Gordon was appointed to the select IMF Task Force on Terrorism Finance and was a principal author of the report on the role of the IMF and World Bank in countering terrorism financing and money laundering.

General sessions and multiple breakout sessions will provide incisive, up-to-date solutions to the challenges banks face every day. This year's topics include:

•    The latest in assessing, scoring and managing money laundering and terrorist financing risks;
•    Stored Value Cards and their AML risks;
•    The latest SAR trends, with real-life examples and guidance;
•    Identifying high risk customers and mitigating that risk;
•    Avoiding breakdowns in internal controls;
•    Anti-money laundering techniques on international issues such as trade finance and due diligence for correspondent and private banking; and
•    The latest guidance on AML/BSA exams — directly from the regulators and expert bankers.

 A few key sessions will run concurrently by asset size for further depth and clarity.

Senior officials from the following agencies will provide attendees with an in-depth review of enforcement actions and first-hand information on examination expectations:  Federal Reserve, Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Office of Thrift Supervision, Securities and Exchange Commission, Office of Foreign Assets Control, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and the Justice Department.
