URBAN TRUST BANK TALKS "SAVINGS" WITH LECKIE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS Event Part of Twelfth Annual Teach Children to Save Day
WASHINGTON, April 29—Today, Henry M. Hall of Urban Trust Bank, along with the American Bankers Association's Robert Schmermund talked "savings" with Leckie Elementary school students as part of the American Bankers Association Education Foundation's twelfth annual Teach Children to Save Day.
"In a time where pop culture persuades kids to spend, it's important that someone teaches them to save," explained Henry Hall, a senior vice-president at Urban Trust Bank. "As a banker, I understand the value of saving, especially during tough economic times. It's essential that my future customers understand it too."
Urban Trust Bank's motto is "Dreams • Knowledge • Wealth, which reflects the bank's experience that knowledge is an essential component of wealth. With that in mind, Urban Trust Bank is launching a financial education initiative through its branch network this summer. Each branch will be equipped with educational material addressing topics such as budgeting, savings, and money management. Urban Trust Bank believes that empowering customers through financial education is the best way to achieve financial success for its customers and for the bank.
Urban Trust Bank volunteers will be joined by more than 12,000 bankers across the country who will share with students the value of saving. Bankers will incorporate games and activities into lessons on the concept of saving, how interest makes money grow, how to create a budget and differentiate between needs and wants. Since the Foundation launched Teach Children to Save Day in 1997, more than 45,000 banker volunteers have reached nearly 2.3 million students with saving lessons.
"Bankers and financial education are a perfect fit," said Robert P. Schmermund, ABA executive vice president of member relations. "Students appreciate financial lessons from bankers, as they would appreciate music lessons from a musician. They are literally getting the information 'straight from the banker's mouth.' And this makes a difference."
