Operation Credit Unions |
Over the past thirty years, changes in the financial marketplace have allowed many credit unions to evolve from niche players into full-service retail depository institutions. Today, these credit unions have the ability to offer complex financial products, just like banks. They have been able to extend their membership to virtually everyone, just like banks. From the public's perspective, this new breed of credit unions is indistinguishable from banks.
Yet these aggressive, sophisticated credit unions don't pay taxes, don't have community reinvestment responsibilities and don't have regulatory supervision comparable to that which governs other complex financial service providers.
By joining Operation Credit Unions, you will commit to working for equal tax and regulatory treatment between banks and diversified, full-service credit unions. This is a long-term commitment that will mean educating your employees, your directors, your shareholders and your policymakers about the characteristics and behaviors of aggressive credit unions in your region and nationwide.
Only by pulling together will our industry succeed in leveling the playing field on which this new breed of credit union roams.
