Banks utilize nonqualified benefit programs to attract and reward top executives and directors. Without such programs, bank executives typically retire with a lower wage replacement ratio than desired. Supplemental Executive Retirement Plans (i.e. SERP's) and other nonqualified deferred compensation arrangements help restore such retirement shortfalls. Such programs can be tied to the bank's performance and therefore serve as a powerful motivational tool for the plan participants since increases in plan benefits depend upon the attainment of organizational and/or individual objectives.
