ABA Community Outreach

Each year, the American Bankers Association and its subsidiaries support various outreach programs that strive to make a positive impact on communities throughout the country and near its headquarters in the Washington, DC region.

The ABA Community Commitment Awards

At its annual convention in New Orleans, the American Bankers Association will present its annual Community Commitment Awards. These awards will recognize and celebrate the innovative and high impact contributions banks of all sizes make to the communities they serve. The awards celebrate institutions that have demonstrated outstanding corporate social responsibility in the areas of Affordable Housing, Economic Development, Small Business Lending, Financial Education, Volunteerism and Philanthropy, and Sustainable Banking. ABA's mission is to help bankers make their communities better through financial education. Through its two national financial education programs, Teach Children to Save and Get Smart About Credit, has helped over 100,000 bankers teach personal finance skills to more than 5 million children and young adults.

National Teach Children to Save Day
This campaign raises awareness about the important role that banks and bankers play in helping young people develop lifelong savings habits. The program has reached 5 million young people with the help of some 100,000 banker volunteers through its annual awareness day and the Teach Children to Save Web site: teachchildrentosave.com.

Get Smart About Credit Day
This is an annual event held in October where bankers visit local classrooms to help students and young adults develop a stronger understanding of credit and how to use it responsibly. Since it was started by the ABA Education Foundation in 2003, more than 18,000 bankers have reached nearly 705,000 young people.

ABA Community Outreach Program

The ABA Community Outreach Committee was created in 2005 to foster team building and volunteerism among ABA staff and continues this pursuit today, sponsoring a wide range of volunteer opportunities for ABA employees in the Washington, DC area. ABA's Community Outreach program includes projects such as volunteering at food kitchens, participating in walkathons and sponsoring donation drives for various charitable organizations.
