The majority of customers pay nothing in bank fees and 70 percent spend $3 or less in monthly fees for checking account maintenance and ATM access.  Here are some tips to keep your bank fees in check.

  • Choose free checking and savings accounts. Most banks offer them.
  • Avoid ATM fees. Use your own bank’s ATM or select cash back from retailers that offer it.
  • Enroll in direct deposit. Many checking accounts are free when your paycheck is automatically deposited each month.
  • Know your minimum balance. Keep at least the minimum balance in your account.
  • Don’t overdraw. Keep track of transactions and account balances to avoid bounced check fees.
  • Opt for e-mail or text alerts. Ask for an automatic alert when your balance falls below a certain level.
